In a move to curtail the misuse of profile pictures, Facebook has introduced a new feature — the Facebook Profile Guard. Launched only in India, as of now, this feature will restrict others from downloading or saving the profile pictures of their Facebook friends.

Here, in this post today, we present you with the steps on how to use the Facebook Profile Guard to protect your profile photos.

What is the New Facebook Profile Picture Guard?

This new feature helps secures your Facebook profile picture by not letting others (Read, Facebook strangers) take screenshots of it, add tags of their own or share it in any way.

This new feature is currently available only in the Android app and is yet to find it’s way to the iOS users.

1. Don’t Ignore the Greeting

If you are among the lucky birds whose Facebook app has been updated to the latest version, you’ll be greeted with the feature when you launch it.

It’ll be in the in the form of “Help Protect your Profile picture”. Tap on it and you’ll get redirected to a page which will let choose a new picture or add a guard to the existing picture.

Here, you can choose to reposition the image, as you do in case of a normal scenario. Once done, click on Save.

Ta-Da, you’re ready with the extra bit of security on your Facebook profile picture.

2. Choose a Design

Once you are done, Facebook will ask you to choose a design which you can choose to have on top of your picture. These designs — in the form of lines and patterns — will act as an overlay to your picture, ultimately discouraging other people from taking screenshots.

You can choose not to have the extras and just go ahead with the plain shield. Once done, click Next and save the new profile picture.

Please note that the privacy settings of your picture will remain same.

Not Comfortable?

If you aren’t satisfied with the new privacy guard and would like to have it removed, thankfully, that too can be done.
Head over to the new profile picture, click on Options and choose the Turn off profile picture guard option.

The drill is same if you want to turn it back on (profile picture > Options > Turn on profile picture guard).

Limitations?

No new feature is without its share of limitations and bugs, and the Profile Picture Guard is no different. Theoretically, it doesn’t let you download, save, add tags or take a screenshot of the profile picture.

However, the screenshot limitations seem to work only in some situations. While at times it did show me the message “Can’t take screenshot due to security policy”, at times, I could take a screen grab quite easily without any fuss.

In the web version, you won’t find the option to save and share. Plus, the previous option to right-click and save pictures has also been removed. So, one would eventually end up saving an HTML file instead of an image file.

But if someone were to grab a screenshot from the web version itself, unfortunately, that is still doable.

Hopefully, with time we will see more additions to this feature. Until then, do let us know how do you feel about this new feature.

Download a Single Facebook Photo on Desktop and Android

It is actually quite simple to download a single image, all you need to do is Click on the image to preview it and then click on “Options” located below it. From the options, click on “Download” and the photo will be downloaded with the highest available resolution.

On Android, just open the picture by tapping on it and then tap on the Menu button (it’s the three vertical dots) located at the right corner of the screen. From the menu, tap on “Save photo” and the photo will be saved.

Download All of Your Facebook Photos

Facebook also natively lets you download a copy of all your Facebook data including all the Photos. This is handy if you don’t want to involve any third-party in the process, but you will be bound to download all Facebook data, such as, posts, friends, messages, Videos and Photos, etc. (handy if you need to Delete your Facebook Account)

To download all your Data, click on the Upside down arrow located at the top right corner of the window. From the menu, click on “Settings”.

In General Account Settings, you will see the option of “Download a copy of your Facebook data”, click on it.

On the next page, click on “Start My Archive” and you will be prompted to provide your Facebook password. Enter the password again and click on Submit, you will be again prompted to confirm the Archive, click on “Start My Archive” here and Facebook will start creating your Archive.

This may take some time depending on how much data you have, your archive will be sent to you via email and you can download from there. If you don’t have too much data, you can also just refresh the same page after 2-5 minutes and most probably your archive will be ready to download.

Note: The archived data is compressed, so the Photos downloaded this way will also be compressed. The quality of the photos might be affected in the process.

It will be in .zip format and when extracted, you will see a separate “Photos” folder with separate folders inside it for each Album.

Caution: Be Careful with the information you have downloaded as it contains all your personal Facebook information. Now that it is on your PC, anyone can access it without any need of Facebook password. If you don’t need it, then deleting it will be a better option. Furthermore, make sure you delete it permanently as information is not deleted permanently with the standard Windows Delete method and can be recovered using proper tools.

Download Your Facebook Photos using Third-party tools

If you don’t mind sharing your Facebook info, then there are many third-party tools that will let you download Facebook photos with complete control. You can download all your Facebook photos or just required albums and photos.
